The recently ended Frankfurt Motor Show once again gave us a window into what we can expect from future cars. This year it wasn’t only what they would look like, but also what will power them. As the world moves to more clean and sustainable energy, electric vehicle production is ramping up. As a result, EVs took centre stage at the bi-annual showcase. More significantly, many of the models on show were not merely concepts to showcase automaker’s ideas and capabilities, but cars that will soon enter production.
TOP 6 ELECTRIC VEHICLE CONCEPTS OF FUTURE CARS
Many of the world’s leading car-makers have recently pledged to have all-electric options in the near future. Additionally, countries such as France, England, and China have also set targets for bans on the sale of fossil-fuel powered vehicles too. With some of the EVs due to hit the road starting 2018, here are 6 notable electric vehicle concepts from the 2017 Frankfurt Motor show:
6. HONDA URBAN EV
Honda has gone for a striking retro look for its Urban EV Concept. The Japanese car-maker has pledged to have an all-electric option for all its future models sold in Europe.
5. MINI ELECTRIC CONCEPT
Perhaps as a reminder that the electric vehicles featured here are still just that, Mini has gone for a self-explanatory name for its EV concept. However, the mini Electric Concept is due to enter production shortly and should be available in 2019.
4. JAGUAR I-PACE
Jaguar’s i-Pace is an all electric SUV that will feature a 90 kWh battery pack that produces 400 horsepower and is set to be released in 2018. As more established automakers embrace clean energy, Jaguar is looking to lead the way. That makes the i-Pace one of the earliest arrivals in this Electric Vehicle concept list and backs up the company’s commitment to electrify all its models by 2020.
3. MERCEDES BENZ EQA
The Mercedes-Benz-EQA is a compact SUV revealed by the German car-maker recently. This 4 seater will features a whole host of technological advances including touch screens and other cutting edge interior tech. In addition, the EQA compact will have a 60-kWh battery, support wireless charging, and have a range of up to 250 miles
2. AUDI AICON
The Aicon is an all electric autonomous car concept with a targeted range of 500 miles per charge. Its projected range does suggest that this is still a concept that Audi is still working on, as does the autonomous aspect. Still, not only are future cars set to have fully electric drivetrains, the goal of many automakers is to make them fully autonomous as well. Consequently, this is a first look at Audi’s vision of that goal.
1. BMW I-VISION DYNAMICS
BMW’s i-Vision is an all-electric luxury sedan designed to challenge Tesla’s domination of a market that Elon Musk’s company has been the only player for several years. The car has a top speed of 120 mph and a range of 373 miles per charge. One of the most popular concepts at this years Frankfurt Motor Show, the i-Vision is a four-door Gran Coupe that is yet to enter into production. When it does, it will join the company’s i3 and i8 electric vehicles.
With the focus being autonomous capabilities and electrical drivetrains, the 6 EV concepts above offer a glimpse of future cars. That a number of them are slated to enter production is also a sign of how far electrical vehicles have come. We cannot wait until some of these concepts actually hit the road
